Holidays
We didn't go away last spring so we decided to try cruising. July saw us depart Harwich on MV Discovery for a voyage to Norway, Iceland and the Faroe Islands..
We were away during what proved to be the worst 2 weeks of the English summer but the jet stream was kind to us, we had a balmy voyage to Bergen while Iceland was suffering a drought! We enjoyed looking round Bergen and the trip on the Flamm railway. On the approach to Iceland the ship's captain kept warning us of the danger of heavy weather to the north of Iceland in arctic waters. In the event all was calm, with only one wet day and in general the weather was quite warm. Until we left Reyjavik that is. On the last afternoon the wind started to blow and once at sea we experieced a force 9 gale for 2 full days. That meant that we missed calling in at the Faroe Isalnds but we were extremely proud of being able to eat five course dinners without feeling ill. Some of the crewe were quite green though. We can definitely recommend Voyages of Discovery, excellent accomodation, lovely crew, wall to wall food of an excellent standard and also very good talks. We thoroughly enjoyed both Iceland and Norway. The scenery was spectacular, everywhere clean and tidy and although it would be expensive to live there they have a lot going for them.
