Volume 12
Janet & Graham Scott
December 2008

A very merry & happy Christmas to all our friends

Once again Janet has reminded me of the time of year and of postage deadlines for Christmas mail.

We are both keeping well although Graham did think his last moments had come when he fell down the stone steps to the Village Hall cellar in October. Fortunately nothing was broken but he suffered with chest and back pain for many weeks afterwards. By the way he had not had one too many at the time either.

Our dog, Judy is getting more wimpy as she gets older. Whenever Chris and Debbie come with their boisterous dog, Holly Judy descends into a quivering wreck. Now she wants to turn around and run home as soon as she hears a farmer shooting which is quite common at this time of the year.

Last year I bragged that we were the first to put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard but I suspect that this year we will not beat the race .

As is now usual our Christmas news will be on the web at www.gwsjms.me.uk/xmas08.htm.

Our home improvement project is now complete and has provided much needed additional space for family visits when we often have three little boys and two dogs together with the six adults.

Work & Hobbies

We have both done some exam invigilation work for our local schools. While Janet occasionally gets asked to do traffic census work for the County Council. Often this involves getting up at the crack of dawn and traveling to some obscure road junction where she meets other Hi-Vis jacket clad insomniacs for a day of counting.

Graham has a big job looming early next year as the Head Teacher of Moulton School is retiring and as Chairman of Governors Graham will have to coordinate the recruitment process. He has been involved in HT recruitment four times over the past few years with his other governorship at the High School, so he is quite experienced now. It is questionable whether or not the members of the interview panel or the candidates suffer the greatest stress these days.

Janet continues in her role as secretary of the Condate Singers who have continued to entertain audiences in Mid Cheshire over the past year. In February she had a hysterectomy so was out of commission for a few months although she found it very difficult to be a lady of leisure. She went in for the op on Tuesday teatime and was home Saturday afternoon. No more mollycoddling these days.

Thanks to the idea of John Prescott Cheshire will be divided into two areas in April next year. We will then be part of Chester and Cheshire West. All it will mean to us is, I'm sure, an increase in Council Tax, certainly not a reduction. Janet is a member of the local Arts Council, which now has to be reorganised to fit in with two other unitary authorities. So there is much work to do - a change in constitution, charitable status etc. As she has also taken over a Secretary pro tem there are meetings to arrange, minutes to write etc., etc .

We have both got rather bogged down over the past few months with problems with our village hall. In the spring the key holder suddenly decided that she could no longer do the job as it was too tying.

That was understandable so the Committee decided to install a computer controlled access system which could be programmed to allow the various users to gain access during their allotted time frame. First instead of a few weeks it took three months to gather in all the quotes. The chosen system was initially installed without problem and should have been capable of easy updating from a remote computer. That is when the problems started. The remote computer seems to be incapable of talking to the system at the hall and both the installers and suppliers are nonplussed. Meanwhile we have had to revert to a key holding system with several people involved which is proving a time consuming logistical problem for Janet. Just what we were trying to avoid!!

Ruby Wedding

A Ruby Wedding Celebration

In August we celebrated our Ruby wedding anniversary. We decided not to have a big bash but had lunch on the day at a lovely pub on the River Dee with our friends, Carol and Geoff. The following weekend all the children and grandchildren joined us for a pleasant but tiring weekend. Janet had bought a new set of garden furniture for the weekend, but British weather as it is we have yet to use the parasol.

A friend took some family photos of us all to mark the occasion. As you can imagine that was no mean feat as the little ones all decided to wriggle at different times. Thank goodness for digital cameras!

Katherine & Santi
We were in Glasgow the other week for Ivan's third birthday. Both Ivan and Oscar are very mobile and run rings round mum and dad, while Ivan is now talking 10 to the dozen in English spiced with Catalan and some Spanish. Graham, of course, was set up to do a whole series of repair jobs, including new outside lights and plumbing repairs. In the course of a trip to B&Q a builder's lorry crashed into the back of the car. His excuse was that he was in a hurry! Luckily the damage is not too bad.

We were fortunate to have them both with us for a week in late spring when Santi had to pay an emergency visit to his father who had been taken ill at his home in Barcelona.

Debbie & Chris

Chris still works for Tiscali but the Italian owner is trying to sell the firm. He refused an offer from Vodaphone earlier in the year in the hope of more money. However we now have a recession so he must be kicking himself as the value of the company has dropped a lot. The latest news is that BSkyB are in detailed negotiations. we shall see.

Debbie has gone back to work at Homebase after her maternity leave. She is only working three days a week at present. The other week we had Mikie for a few hours as she had to look in at a new store in Sandbach, a few miles away from us. She has found a marvellous child minder, Jeanette, not far from their house . Jeanette has an allotment and a big soft dog and Mikie really likes going there. Her two daughters have been named as "Mikie's harem"!

Holidays

This year we had a short holiday in Cushendall in County Antrim, Northern Ireland in September, with Chris, Debs and Mikie. We had surprisingly good weather with only one day of rain. There is some really beautiful scenery there and at one point the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland was easily visible over ten miles of sea.

Our cottage in Cushendall was well equipped with easy access to the beach. The sea was rather too cold for bathing but Mikie still enjoyed the sand

Mikie on the beach Giant's Causeway

As well as the scenery we sampled some excellent food and tried the malt whiskey at the Bushmills distillery. Janet and Graham also had a cliff top hike over the Giant's Causeway cliffs. Unfortunately the path was too rough for Mikie and his buggy so he just had to stay and look after mummy, daddy and Holly.

All the best to you all for the Christmas season and the New Year.
All our love,
Janet & Graham
